Hundreds followed the way of the cross through downtown Ottawa streets on a sunny Good Friday, solemnly marking the holy day.

The main Catholic procession began at Saint Patrick’s Basilica on Kent Street and was led by Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, followed by parishioners, after a morning mass.

Together, they visited Ottawa landmarks and celebrated the 14-part steps of Jesus’s last day, beginning with his condemnation to death and ending with him being laid in his tomb.

At the third station, the group, full of kids on scooters and grandchildren holding their grandparents’ hands, congregated at the foot of the steps of the Supreme Court of Canada.

“Who would’ve believed that the Creator would lose everything and then regain it all in order that we might live our relationship with all things?” Prendergast asked the crowd.

Margie Becker’s friend was singing in the Communion and Liberation choir and invited her and her family to attend. Together with husband, Joseph, and their two sons and daughter, Becker walked the procession for the first time.

There was something special for Becker about publicly “joining with other believers” to honour what she said was Jesus’s public sacrifice.

The procession continued to the Peace Tower, the National Gallery of Canada and finished at Notre Dame Cathedral.

The Holy Week began on Palm Sunday. Good Friday marks the day of Jesus’s crucifixion. On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate Christ’s resurrection.

The procession in downtown Ottawa was one of several in the national capital region, including a traditional procession from St. Anthony’s Church in Little Italy.
