Flour recall for E. coli risk updated again with new brands

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency updated it’s warning about potentially-contaminated flour Sunday, adding new product information to an alert issued last week.

The E. coli warning covers 10 kg bags of Creative Baker all-purpose flour and a string of Robin Hood-branded products, including all-purpose, blending and bread flours in 1.36, 5 and 10 kg bags with specific lot codes and best-before dates.

The new product information came out of a CFIA food safety investigation.

BACKGROUND: More than two dozen people sickened by E. coli linked to recalled Robin Hood flour

Ardent Mills is recalling the latest products, which were distributed to stores across Canada. The first recall March 28 involved products from Smucker Foods of Canada Corp.

There have been no reports of people getting sick from the products covered by Sunday’s warning– but there were 26 cases of E.coli O121 with a matching genetic “fingerprint” in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador from November to February. Six people were hospitalized.

The CFIA said the warnings are a reminder not to taste or eat raw dough or batter because raw flour can be contaminated with harmful bacteria.
