The Sens Mile is not a mile long. In fact, it’s not even a kilometre long.

Caught up in the playoff excitement, the Citizen got to wondering a few things about the party strip along Elgin Street. And so we asked the City of Ottawa about the costs of installing the Sens Mile signs: $4,400.

Then, we wondered, just how long is Sens Mile?

According to a Google Maps measurement, it is roughly 830 metres. (A mile, for those who don’t know, is about 1,600 metres.)

So we went back to the city and asked, what, exactly, are the borders of Sens Mile?

“Sens mile begins at Gladstone and ends at Laurier for a total of 9 intersections,” said the city in an email Tuesday.

Off to Google Maps we went, and lo and behold, it isn’t a mile.

But wait: Globe and Mail reporter Les Perreaux, on Twitter, pointed out that it may be a return trip.

He might have a point: 830 x 2 = 1,660 metres. Which is 1.03 miles.

(As a side note, this doesn’t even address the issue that, as Canada’s capital, perhaps it ought to be Sens Kilometre, or perhaps 830 Sens Metres, or something more eloquent but equally metric.)
