In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

Before the Canadian Citizenship Act came into force on Jan. 1, 1947, there was no such thing in law as a “Canadian citizen”, only British subjects. This all changed with the new legislation. A historic ceremony on Jan. 3, 1947, conferred Canadian citizenship for the first time on 26 people, among them: Prime Minister Mackenzie King, who received certificate No. 0001, and acclaimed photographer Yousuf Karsh, who was born in Armenia.
