The City of Gatineau is grappling with major floods and more than 6,000 bags of salt are ready to be handed out Wednesday.

“We have not seen such a high level of water in 20 years,” says Jean Boileau, director of the communications at the City of Gatineau.

“Our teams are ready and we have taken all measures to intervene.”

The city has already handed out more than 4,000 bags of sand in the past couple of days and will keep doing so as the weather forecast indicates strong chances of rainfall.

“Weather and hydrological forecasts indicate a gradual increase in river flows and levels in the region’s major rivers over the next few days,” said Gatineau communications officer Cynthia Lauzon.

As they visit residences located by the flooded streets, firefighters from the Gatineau fire safety service are recommending residents to bring all their belongings upstair and to turn off electrical power if needed.

Some major roads in Gatineau are partially closed due to the flooding. Fer-à-Cheval Road, Jacques-Cartier Street and Hurtubise Boulevard are some of the roads where detours have been put into place.

There are six main locations where residents can get sandbags, including the Eugène-Beaudoin’s centre at 476 Blvd. Saint-René E.

For more information on where to get bags of sand, residents can visit the City’s website
