Local business owners say they haven’t seen much of an impact yet from DND’s slow move to its new headquarters at the former Nortel campus.

Sophia Vallati, owner of Underdog Grooming, five minutes from the campus, said she has seen one new client from the DND but not much else.

“It’s something people keep talking about, but it’s not happening,” Vallati said Wednesday.

Sophia Vallati, left, is shown at the Underdog Grooming shop she owns with Sharon Coupland, an assistant dog groomer. Vallati said that business may pick up in the long-term when more Department of National Defence employees move to the area but the change will not be sudden.

She said she expects long-term growth when more people move into the area but until then she’s not depending on potential clients from the DND.

Tammy Robinson, owner of Your Fit MindBody fitness studio, opened her business last November because she saw an opening in the community. She said she had no expectation of significant clientele coming from DND because they have their own facilities on site.

“Truthfully, no one’s come in,” Robinson said.

The owner of Korn’s Convenience Store, Edward Li, said he expects more customers in two or three years but not now.

“There’s been maybe a 10 per cent change at best,” Li said.

Li opened his store in 2011 but he said the location is not popular enough to draw much attention. He is hoping business will pick up but he is not sure when the campus will be full enough to result in larger returns.
