In anticipation of Canada’s sesquicentennial celebrations, the Citizen’s Bruce Deachman has been out in search of Ottawans — 150 of them — to learn their stories of life and death, hope and love, the exceptional and the everyday. We’ll share one person’s story every day until Canada Day.

“For me, bingo is time to myself and time to relax.

“I started playing bingo more often when I retired. I was with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. That’s 21 years ago. I’m 74. I played before that, but maybe only once a month with friends — that’s about it. Now I do it three times a week. My husband and I, we live in Masham … he comes to town and meets with his friends, and I come to bingo. Three times a week. And I’m religious about those days: Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. I play two bingos a day; one at 12:45 and another at 3:45, so I’m here for about six hours.

“I play 27 cards at a time, and it relaxes me, it does. It’s my time, my space. I’m in my little world. When you work all your life and then you retire, you need something … it’s my time to be by myself. Otherwise I’m with my husband — we do things together, we travel. But my time is the bingo. I’m not a social butterfly; I don’t need people with me all the time. I’m good by myself. And I read in between games

“I don’t mind not winning. I don’t win often. I don’t know why. It’s a game of chance, like 6/49. I did win a jackpot last month. But I don’t win often. I help a lot of charities, let’s face it.”
