If you are ever caught in an earthquake, here’s what you need to know:

Indoors

  • The rule is “Drop, cover, hold on.” Drop under solid furniture (table, desk, bed.) Cover your head and torso. Hold tight.
  • In a hallway, flatten yourself against a wall.
  • In a mall, go into the nearest store.
  • Stay away from windows, or shelves with heavy objects.
  • In a wheelchair, lock the wheels and protect your head and neck.

Outdoors

  • Stay outside. Go to an open area away from buildings. In a crowded place, take cover when you won’t be trampled.

In a vehicle

  • Pull over and stop. Stay inside.
  • Leave way for emergency vehicles.
  • Stay away from buildings or bridges — anything that could collapse.
  • Listen to the radio.
  • Stay in the car until help arrives if power lines have come down on top of it.

The U.S. Geological Survey said more than 143 million people in the continental U.S. live in an earthquake zone.

Stay away from:

  • Doorways: Doors may slam shut and cause injuries.
  • Windows, bookcases, tall furniture and light fixtures: You could be hurt by shattered glass or heavy objects.
  • Elevators: If you are already in an elevator, hit the button for every floor and get out as soon as you can.
  • Downed power lines: Stay at least 10 metres away.
