Indoors
- The rule is “Drop, cover, hold on.” Drop under solid furniture (table, desk, bed.) Cover your head and torso. Hold tight.
- In a hallway, flatten yourself against a wall.
- In a mall, go into the nearest store.
- Stay away from windows, or shelves with heavy objects.
- In a wheelchair, lock the wheels and protect your head and neck.
Outdoors
- Stay outside. Go to an open area away from buildings. In a crowded place, take cover when you won’t be trampled.
In a vehicle
- Pull over and stop. Stay inside.
- Leave way for emergency vehicles.
- Stay away from buildings or bridges — anything that could collapse.
- Listen to the radio.
- Stay in the car until help arrives if power lines have come down on top of it.

Stay away from:
- Doorways: Doors may slam shut and cause injuries.
- Windows, bookcases, tall furniture and light fixtures: You could be hurt by shattered glass or heavy objects.
- Elevators: If you are already in an elevator, hit the button for every floor and get out as soon as you can.
- Downed power lines: Stay at least 10 metres away.
