Ottawa police are reporting an increase in the number of break-and-enters to insecure sheds and garages across the city as the weather warms and lawn mowers, barbecues, bicycles and other outdoor items become more attractive to thieves.

Police are reminding residents to ensure sheds and garages are properly secured to prevent thefts. Garage doors should be left closed when left unattended. An insecure garage door can also facilitate entry to a person’s home, which should act as extra incentive to make sure they are locked and closed, according to police.

In case of a break in, police ask that residents take note of the make, model and serial numbers of all high-priced property. Unique identifiers or markers on the items are also helpful in recovering them, according to police. Additionally, photographs of unique items — a high-end bike, for example — can assist investigators. Also, with the use of social media, images of unique stolen property can also be quickly disseminated by the police to a significant number of people in the community in an attempt to get the stolen property back.

Anyone with information regarding a break and enter is asked to call the Ottawa police at 613-236-1222, ext. 4533. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
