City Council today approved a recommendation from Housing Services to defer and eventually forgive the non-transit component of development charges associated with 16 affordable housing units being proposed by Habitat for Humanity in Orléans. Council has done this for other Habitat projects in the past.

Council approved an updated Affordable Housing Land and Funding Policy that supports the development of new affordable housing by making surplus land available for new housing projects‎. The policy also requires that a portion of revenue from the sale of surplus City land be used to fund new affordable housing projects.

Council approved an eight-storey mixed-use building in the Glebe that will include a retirement home, a residential care facility with commercial space on the ground floor.

Canderel and Succession Developments are planning the building at 890 and 900 Bank Street. Council approved an increased height limit to allow for an eight-storey building. The development has been designed with the highest portion situated at the southeastern corner of the site, and steps down to six storeys at the corner of Bank Street and Thornton Avenue. Where the building faces the existing townhouses and detached dwellings along Monk Street, there is a further height transition from six to four storeys. The design was also revised to make the building’s north façade less imposing on the neighbouring three-storey home.

Council also approved demolition of 234 O’Connor Street, which is located between Somerset Street and Cooper Street, in the Centretown Heritage Conservation District. The building has been vacant for 15 years following fire damage and is in poor condition. The owner plans to develop this site with a new building within five years. In the interim, the site will be used as a temporary park.
