The House of Sport at the RA Centre is taking shape, as several National Sporting Organizations (NSO) and Multi-Sport Organizations (MSO) are now joining this collaborative and innovative sport hub, including the Coaching Association of Canada. Today, the newest members of the House of Sport were welcomed to the initiative by Mayor Jim Watson at an event with project partners, the RA and Ottawa Tourism.

The House of Sport operates in a similar fashion to an entrepreneur incubator; it could be described as the innovation centre of sport. This collaborative hub will be a collection of various sports federations, organizations and companies working under one roof, creating opportunities for sharing costs, business development, communication networks and best practices.

Currently, the Ottawa-Gatineau region is home to more than 60 percent of the National Sporting Organizations (NSOs) and Multi-Sport Organizations (MSOs) in Canada. A May 2015 economic impact study illustrated the importance of this sector to our local economy, showing a real economic impact of $76.25 million. Bringing these organizations under one roof will ensure that each and every one of them has access to the critical infrastructure they need to grow and develop their sport or supporting service, thanks to what will be world-class shared facilities and services.

The $6.9 million House of Sport project will re-purpose 35,000 square feet of the RA Centre’s existing west wing. The City of Ottawa demonstrated its commitment to this important economic initiative with a one-time $500,000 capital funding contribution, with the balance of the project funded by the RA.

The House of Sport concept is modeled after the Maison du Sport International in Lausanne, Switzerland, and was created as a new collaborative community space. The “Maison” is home to a number of international sports federations and leading players in international sports administration, including the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations.

Quotes

“The House of Sport will benefit the growth of our young athletes and Ottawa’s competitive edge in sports. It will also be a great economic development asset that will increase Ottawa’s capacity to host major sporting events, conferences, and help our sport organizations retain creative and professional talent. It builds upon the foundation of our “Bid More, Win More, Host More” partnership with Ottawa Tourism.”

Mayor Jim Watson

“The RA has contributed to the sport community and the nation for 75 years. In addition to producing international podium results, we have provided opportunities in both traditional and non-traditional sport for high performance, recreational and grassroots athletes. The RA is uniquely positioned to partner on this exciting, transformative initiative with the City of Ottawa. We are thrilled to be at the forefront of sport administration in the country.”

Tosha Rhodenizer, CEO, RA Centre

“The Coaching Association of Canada welcomes this exciting opportunity to join the new home of the national sport community in Ottawa. The CAC is eager to harness the innovative opportunities for growth, leadership, and partnership that will present themselves in this collaborative work environment.”

Lorraine Lafrenière, CEO, Coaching Association of Canada

“The House of Sport is an important asset that sets Ottawa apart from other destinations. Ottawa Tourism already works closely with the sporting community to attract regional, national and international sporting events to Canada’s capital region. Now, with the innovation of the House of Sport, we will benefit greatly from the shared knowledge and expertise of these groups to bring even more events to Ottawa.”

Michael Crockatt, President & CEO, Ottawa Tourism
