In anticipation of Canada’s sesquicentennial celebrations, the Citizen’s Bruce Deachman has been out in search of Ottawans — 150 of them — to learn their stories of life and death, hope and love, the extraordinary and the everyday. We’ll share one person’s story every day until Canada Day.
Yajing Jian: “We’re here doing our engagement photos. We met the way a lot of modern couples meet: We met online. That was last year, in July.”
Cole Ransom: “It was my second time trying online dating. I was new to the experience, and I guess I just got lucky.”
YJ: “I’d gone on one or two online dates before. I feel like that’s how most people meet now, because it’s very hard to meet people at work.”
CR: “For our first date, we went to a Big Rig nearby to where we both worked, on Ogilvie Road. It was only supposed to be a quick get-to-know-you date, but we ended up staying for four or five hours, that kind of thing.”
YJ: “Yeah, we just chatted, and then we looked at our watches and it was like nine o’clock. So we’re like, ‘OK, that went well.’”
Were you nervous going into it?
CR: “Yeah, a little bit.”
YJ: “I think you’re always nervous on first dates. But it was comfortable. We talked about everything that you probably shouldn’t talk about on first dates: Religion, politics, want kids, don’t want kids … We talked about everything.”
CR: “Yeah, we just aired it all out. It was pretty crazy.”
YJ: “Then we moved in together after a few months, and now we have a dog and we have a house and we’re getting married next May. I’m very excited to get married to this guy. I’m excited to go on the journey together.”
CR: “It’s been an awesome ride.”
