Her Excellency Sharon Johnston joined Mayor Jim Watson in presenting the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers at a ceremony at Ottawa City Hall this morning. The medal is awarded to those who have made significant, sustained and unpaid contributions to their community.
Over 60 residents attended the ceremony to receive their medal. So what does it take to receive such an honour? Among the volunteers who were recognized were Allison Dingle, Cyril Leeder and Trina Costantini-Powell.
Allison Dingle, a previous winner of the Mayor’s City Builder award, was recognized for her four decades as a volunteer for the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. She has also canvassed for the Canadian Cancer Society for 20 years and chairs the Centretown Emergency Food Centre.
Cyril Leeder, one of the original Ottawa Senators owners, was obviously very involved with the Ottawa Senators Foundation. But the aptly named Mr. Leeder was also a big ‘leader’ in the community. He helped found what is now the Bell Capital Cup charitable hockey tournament and has been a champion and fundraiser for the Ottawa Hospital’s cancer treatment centre.
And Trina Costantini-Powell has left her mark on the Capital as well. A local volunteer since 1968, she currently serves as president of the National Congress of Italian-Canadians in the National Capital District, and as an advisory board member of the Dalhousie Food Cupboard.
Do you know an amazing local volunteer? Nominate someone for a Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers or the Mayor’s City Builder Award.
