A team of female surgeons from Montfort Hospital have added their voices (and faces) to an international social media movement aimed at changing stereotypes about what surgeons look like.

Female surgeons from around the world have posted their pictures with the hashtag ilooklikeasurgeon.

Dr. Suleena Duhaime, who joined three colleagues in a photo as part of the social media movement, said she has enjoyed seeing other female surgeons from around the world post their photographs.

“It is fantastic to be able to relate to other women who have this career path through social media,” she said.

Although more women than men graduate in medicine every year, surgery remains male dominated.

Duhaime said there is a perception among some that it is difficult to be a surgeon and have a decent work-life balance, but that is not true, she added.

“I have two young kids, I am happily married and I make it to soccer games.”

She said she was drawn by the diversity of the work general surgeons do.

At Montfort, almost half of physicians and one-third of surgeons are female.
