In anticipation of Canada’s sesquicentennial celebrations, the Citizen’s Bruce Deachman has been out in search of Ottawans — 150 of them — to learn their stories of life and death, hope and love, the extraordinary and the everyday. We’ll share one person’s story every day until Canada Day.

“I work here at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency at the Ottawa Lab, Carling. I’m a chemist, and I feel very fortunate to be working at the Central Experimental Farm; I go outside, jogging, or working out. We do yoga outside during the summer, fall and spring, and we take walks. And I’ve passed by this greenhouse many times. It looks like a fantasy place that you’d see in Alice in Wonderland. And today I thought I should check to see if it’s open, and it was. I’ve never been inside before. It’s so warm and beautiful. I think I’ll come here more often. I don’t want to say just ‘nice.’ It’s more than that. The vegetation is luxurious, and I find the architecture is beautiful. Maybe I’ll do a tea party in here with my colleagues. It’s such a whimsical place.

“So I felt fortunate. It’s not everywhere you could just walk in without somebody guarding it. It’s nice that people respect the place and that it’s kept in good condition.”
