A commitment for a long-term agreement between the City of Ottawa and the Ottawa Art Gallery for the management of the municipal art gallery was approved today by Finance and Economic Development Committee.
The Ottawa Art Gallery was designated by the City as its operator of the municipal art gallery and custodian of the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art over 25 years ago. A new, larger home for the Gallery is being built by the City as part of a mixed-use project that includes the redevelopment of Arts Court of a multi-tenant, multi-disciplinary arts facility including a hotel, condo and new learning space for the University of Ottawa.
City staff recommended a long-term agreement with the Ottawa Art Gallery in recognition of its persistent work to develop a new facility, its lengthy partnership with the City, proven strong management, active governance, innovative programming, prudent collection management and record of community outreach. The agreement is for 10 years, with the possibility of three five-year extensions.
The Committee also approved a staff recommendation to phase out a program to give property-tax relief to businesses that have vacant properties in the commercial and industrial tax classes. The recommendation followed an extensive discussion with the business community. The program will be phased out over two years.
The Committee received reports on the City’s procurement record for 2016, as well as a report on the status of the operating and capital budgets for the first quarter of the year.
Finance and Economic Development Committee reports will be considered by City Council at its meeting of Wednesday, May 10, 2017.
