When the National Arts Centre opens the doors to its multi-million dollar renewal on July 1, free Wi-Fi will be one of the attractions, thanks to a three-year sponsorship deal announced Wednesday.
In a deal that supports the NAC’s mission to become one of the most digitally connected arts centres in North America, telecommunications giant Rogers will provide high-speed, secure Wi-Fi to the one million visitors who enter the building each year.
“Having a state-of-the-art, connected arts centre will not only give our patrons the experience they expect, we’re going to be best-in-class virtually overnight,” said Peter Herrndorf, the NAC’s president and CEO, in a statement.
That doesn’t mean patrons will be encouraged to use their smartphones during performances, although some artists may allow it. As part of the rejuvenation of the institution, there will be plenty of space for the public to hang out in during the day, with the hope of transforming the building into a community arts centre.
To entice fans of all ages, a series of free family activities and concerts will take place in the new Atrium from July 2-23 as part of this summer’s Canada Scene festival.
Rogers will also become the presenting partner of the 2017 edition of the NAC gala, an annual event that has raised more than $12 million over the past 20 years to support performing arts initiatives across Canada. This year’s gala, featuring songstress k.d lang, takes place Sept. 16.
