Today, Mayor Jim Watson, Councillor Shad Qadri, Chair of the Ottawa Board of Health, and Dr. Isra Levy, Medical Officer of Health, unveiled the new have THAT talk video series on mental health.
“The new have THAT talk video series and activity guide presents an innovative way to give Ottawa residents helpful tips, tools, and information about how we can all work together to promote and protect positive mental health” said Mayor Jim Watson. “With 1 in 5 people experiencing a mental illness at some point in their lives, it is clear that these resources will be of benefit to many, not only in Ottawa, but across the country as well.”
The information contained in the videos is based on best evidence in mental health, and each video was reviewed by over 15 local and national partners in the mental health field, as well as those with lived experience.
At this morning’s launch, Mary Deacon, Chair of the Bell Let’s Talk mental health initiative; Dr. Ian Colman, Canada Research Chair in Mental Health Epidemiology, University of Ottawa; Dr. Ian Manion, Director, Youth Mental Health Research Unit at Institute of Mental Health Research at the Royal; and Dr. Azaad Kassam, psychiatrist at Queensway-Carleton Hospital participated in a panel discussion about mental health and how the new video series will help local residents and their families.
“With the support of Bell Let’s Talk and our collaborative work with over 15 national and local partners to create these evidence-based videos and activity guide, we are helping people talk about mental health and reach out to get the support and services they need” said Councillor Shad Qadri, Chair of the Ottawa Board of Health. “We know that there is no health without mental health and by working together, we can continue to reduce stigma, build resilience and encourage people to get help sooner”.
“Mental health support is such a critical need, which is why Bell Let’s Talk is very pleased to partner with Ottawa Public Health for the launch of the new have THAT talk mental health video series,” said Mary Deacon, Chair of Bell Let’s Talk. “By increasing awareness and understanding about mental illness, and encouraging everyone to talk about mental health, we can help people all around the country living with mental illness get the support they need.”

The release of the videos coincides with Mental Health Week (May 1-7), an annual mental health promotion initiative which provides opportunities to talk about mental health and highlight the resources available in our community.
