A Kingston-area man has been charged after alert phone company workers spotted a telephone-line thief artistically committed to his enterprise.

Kingston police say that were called by phone workers to a repair site Tuesday at about 11 a.m.

The official phone workers were on a service call when they spotted a truck with an orange light on its roof and reflective cones around it.

They called police, but before officers could arrive, a man whom the workers didn’t recognize returned to the truck dressed as a phone line worker. He was wearing a hard hat, coveralls and rubber work boots.

The man was still there when police arrived, and officers determined he had been on the site Monday, too.

An inspection of the lines confirmed more than 1,000 metres of copper wire, valued at approximately $40,000, had been cut. The cut lines caused the phone service to malfunction two days in a row.

The 36-year-old man was charged with theft over $5,000 and mischief over $5,000.
