The mayor of Carleton Place, Louis Antonakos, is facing a suspension of 90 days’ pay after a provincial integrity commissioner ruled he violated city council’s code of conduct by disclosing confidential information gleaned from in-camera council sessions.

In his ruling, commissioner Robert Swayze called it “the most egregious disclosure of confidential information I have ever encountered in nine years serving as an Integrity Commissioner. In my opinion, it should be dealt with severely.”

The full report was made public Friday, and will be presented at council’s next full session Tuesday.

Carleton Place council expects a full house at the council meeting, where Swayze will take the unusual step of delivering his verdict in-person.

But there’s one notable resident who has said he won’t be attending the council session: Antonakos himself.

In a Thursday afternoon posting on his personal Facebook page, Antonakos said he will skip Tuesday’s council session, a decision that is not sitting well with his council colleagues, or with a considerable segment of his constituency.

In his statement, Antonakos said he accepts the integrity commissioner’s ruling “and will move forward knowing that due process has been served in accordance with his mandate.”

The official complaint was lodged with the Integrity Commissioner Feb. 23 by local developer Volundur (Wally) Thorbjornsson, who worked closely with then-councillor Antonakos during the 2014 election campaign, which Antonakos won by a narrow 262-vote margin over incumbent Wendy LeBlanc.

Thorbjornsson claimed Antonakos had secretly recorded in-camera council sessions and used confidential information as “bartering chips” to gain election support from prominent and influential land developers.

More to come…
