As heavy rains are set to pound the National Capital Region over the weekend, floodwaters are rising and many homes are at risk.

The Ottawa River is expected to rise by as much as 35 centimetres (or about a foot) in the next few days.

The Gatineau city government is actively calling for volunteers to help with filling sandbags. On Thursday, 2,400 sandbags were filled by volunteers.

If you live in Gatineau, call 311 to find out how to help. If you live outside Gatineau, dial 819-595-2002.

It’s recommended you bring a shovel to help fill the sandbags.

Ottawa is not currently seeking volunteers. For now, the city says you should check with neighbours to see if they need any assistance.

Thanks to all who've expressed interest in volunteering with flooding efforts. We do not require volunteers at this time.

If you would like to help, please check in with neighbours who may require assistance during this time of flooding.

If you live outside these cities, check with your local government on how to assist — and check in with your neighbours.
