Mayor Jim Watson wants to hold back the municipal tax man while residents hit by floods can focus on their properties and families.

Watson indicated Tuesday that he’ll ask for council’s support to defer the final property tax due date to Dec. 7 for people affected and displaced by the floods.

“This will provide some temporary relief to residents most affected by the flood during this time of need so they can focus on rebuilding their lives and properties,” Watson says in a post on his website.

The regular timelines have the city mailing the final tax bills between May 17-24 with a payment due date of June 15.

The city will have to come up with a process to identify properties affected by the floods and, thus, be eligible for the proposed tax deferral.

Watson says he’ll bring a motion to council Wednesday asking for staff to develop the deferral program over the next 30 days. The program would be brought back to council for final approval after being reviewed by the Watson-led finance and economic development committee.

The city already has a limited tax deferral program. Watson is proposing Dec. 7 as the deferred deadline since it’s the same date used in a program to help working farmers pay their property taxes.

Watson notes that West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry will declare a conflict of interest and won’t participate in the discussion on flood-related tax deferrals because the councillor has been personally impacted by the flood.
