Dry weather and gravity are gradually draining away the floodwater, though it’s far too early to take away the sandbags.

As of late Wednesday, the Ottawa River at Gatineau had fallen 30 centimetres — about a foot — from its peak early this week. It fell eight cm during the day Wednesday.

Lac Deschênes is down about nine cm from its peak. Officials say a wide, lake-like section of river rises and falls more slowly than a narrow section.

Fresh measurements are due out Thursday morning, and should show a further drop.

The weather forecast shows showers from Friday to Sunday, but these are not expected to bring a heavy drenching.

The rate of flow of the river downstream at the Carillon dam stood at 8,400 cubic metres per second late Wednesday, down from a peak of 8,862. It is trending down each day, but that’s still an unusually fast-flowing river.

Meanwhile, Gatineau published its recovery plan Thursday. It contains advice for homeowners, including: Contact a master electrician before turning the power back on, and do not stay in a house where standing water has been present.

The city will be inspecting culverts, checking for erosion damage to roads and bridges, inspecting municipal buildings and cleaning up debris, among other jobs. Because of the need for safety inspections, roads will not all re-open as soon as the water recedes.

It will collect sandbags from homes and other bagged sites, and will recycle them, but this will take time.

More to come.
