In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

Ever noticed the funky public art on display at Jack Purcell Park, near Elgin Street? The group of structures, which look like giant metal badminton racquets, paid homage to Jack Purcell, a famed Canadian badminton player.

The only problem? The monument designers got the wrong Jack Purcell – the real one was a local community builder who used to fix hockey sticks for kids, not the Guelph badminton player. The designers later recast their badminton racquets as “stylized trees.”
