Water levels continue to drop
The Ottawa River continued dropping at a rate of 18 centimetres a day, according to the Ottawa River Regulating Committee. As of 5 p.m. on Thursday, the river was at 44.74 metres above sea level at the Hull Marina in Gatineau. That’s a drop of 44 cm from when the river peaked on Monday.
Lac Deschênes is down about 15 cm from its peak, now falling at a rate of 12 cm a day. Officials say a wide, lake-like section of river rises and falls more slowly than a narrow section. The river at Thurso is down 34 cm.
Showers predicted this weekend
After a few dry days, Environment Canada is predicting a rainy weekend. The weather forecast shows showers from Friday to Sunday, but these are not expected to bring a heavy drenching. Showers are expected to begin around midnight on Friday and continue on Saturday and Sunday, when there is a 60 per cent chance of rain.
Gatineau unveils recovery plan
The recovery plan released Thursday contains advice for homeowners, including contacting a master electrician before turning the power back on and not staying in a house where standing water has been present.
The city will be inspecting culverts, checking for erosion damage to roads and bridges, and inspecting municipal buildings and cleaning up debris, among other jobs. Because of the need for safety inspections, roads will not all re-open as soon as the water recedes.
It will collect sandbags from homes and other bagged sites, and will recycle them, but this will take time.
Ottawa flood victims asked to register with Red Cross
The Red Cross has begun registering people in Ottawa who were impacted by the flood, so that city officials can help them efficiently.
People affected by the flood can register by phoning (800) 863-6582 from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., or between 9 and 5 Saturday.
They may also visit any of the four Emergency Community Support Centres located at the R.J. Kennedy Arena, 1115 Dunning Rd., the Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre East Parking Lot, 102 Greenview Ave., the Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Centre, 262 Len Purcell Dr. and the Fitzroy Harbour Community Center, 100 Clifford Campbell St. between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
