The waters are falling steadily and, more importantly, the rain expected for the weekend is unlikely to make them rise again.

As of late Thursday, the Ottawa River in downtown Gatineau was down 44 centimetres from its peak, or about a 18 inches, and was dropping at a rate of 18 cm a day.

It was down 17 cm late Thursday on Lac Deschênes, which rises and falls more slowly because of its width.

The rate of flow measured at the Carillon dam downstream was down to 8,000 cubic metres per second, much greater than normal but still down by about 10 per cent from the peak earlier this week.

Meanwhile, there’s rain coming, but officials are hopeful that it won’t have a major effect.

Environment Canada has called for showers through the weekend, but not sustained periods of rain.

Much of the rain may pass south of this region, leaving Ottawa on the fringe, said Patrick Larson of the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority.

“If that happens, things will be fine,” he said Friday.

“Even if we do get 20 millimetres or so over a couple of days, there has been enough drying that there will be a little bit of capacity in the ground to infiltrate. We have gained some room in the streams now,” and he expects the rain will not add to existing flood problems.

Meanwhile, in the Outaouais, Friday is the last day of free bus service on the STO.

More to come.
