At a ceremony today, Mayor Jim Watson and Rideau Vanier Ward Councillor Mathieu Fleury, along with local business owners and members of the community, celebrated the official opening of the redesigned George Street Plaza in the ByWard Market.
The George Street Plaza is the first project in a larger initiative aimed at revitalizing the public spaces of the ByWard Market. The Plaza renewal includes new concrete surfacing and in-ground infrastructure enhancements, as well as the addition of a granite programming space with seating. Enhancements include a shade structure, LED lighting, a mist feature, drinking fountain, heritage clock and shade trees.
Road work was also completed on George Street to improve the pedestrian experience, including narrowing the intersection at George Street and William Street, and the addition of raised accessible crossings with materials that differentiate the pedestrian zone.
Later this spring, the plaza will be further enhanced by the addition of two signature stands, one on either side of the ByWard Market Square. These unique vending spaces will serve as premier locations for the sale of high-quality, locally produced goods.
Quotes
“This is an important step towards realizing our vision of a vibrant and active ByWard Market area. Residents, visitors and businesses will all benefit from the improvements made to transform the George Street Plaza into a more welcoming and appealing space.”
Mayor Jim Watson
“The new George Street Plaza creates an inviting space for the public right at the gateway to the ByWard Market. It’s a friendly gathering place for everyone who visits the Market, from shoppers strolling down George Street to passengers arriving from the future Rideau LRT Station.”
Councillor Mathieu Fleury, Rideau Vanier Ward
