In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

A 10-metre-high berm, built at the east end of TD Place Stadium in Lansdowne Park, is made from tonnes of contaminated soil and old garbage excavated from the site. The City of Ottawa could have trucked the soil out, but instead chose to reuse most of the material dug from the 15-hectare site, which contained toxic leftovers from the boilers and refrigeration units that once operated there. The contaminated soil was covered by a fabric designed to prevent leaching, and topped with one metre of clean soil.
