After a weekend in custody, the 37-year-old transport truck driver charged in last week’s fiery crash that killed four on Highway 401 was released on bail Monday.

Dunhill Tabanao of Vaudreuil-Dorion, near Montreal, was required to deposit a $10,000 cash bail with the court and his wife and brother-in-law, who agreed to act as his sureties, each pledged a $20,000 bond to secure his release.

Justice of the peace Claudette Coulas noted that Tabanao’s passport, which expired in 2016, had already been surrendered to the OPP.

She forbid him from applying for a new one or any travel documents while on bail.

Additionally, he’s prohibited from making contact with any witnesses involved in his case or the families of the deceased and injured victims of the crash.

Tabanao was charged by OPP with four counts of dangerous driving causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm following a seven-vehicle pileup early last Thursday morning in the westbound lanes of Highway 40, just west of Joyceville Road.

Christine Hanrahan, 44, her longtime partner Pierre Courville, 40, Hanrahan’s son Mitchell Caird, 25, and his friend Zack MacGregor, 21, all from Kingston, perished in the crash.

The car they were travelling in burst into flame upon impact.

The crash involved four transport trucks, a smaller commercial truck and two passenger vehicles.

Two occupants of the commercial truck also sustained serious injuries and were transported to Kingston General Hospital.

More than 30 supporters packed bail court at the Kingston court house to witness Tabanao’s release.

His next appearance is to be in mid-June.
