It’s going to be a busy weekend.

Expect plenty of road closures, runners and treasure hunters.

The Great Glebe Garage Sale runs Saturday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. The gigantic rummage sale, which covers the entire neighbourhood, turns 31 this year and will take place rain or shine.

The Glebe borders the Rideau Canal, Bronson Avenue and the Queensway.

“What I like is that a lot of unexpected things happen,” said Colette Downie, one of the event organizers.

“There’s music on a lot of the corners. And sometimes the kids from the community centre dance classes do a flash mob.”

Organizers suggest people leave their cars at home, but bring lots of cash (smaller bills preferred) and small change. ATMs in the area empty quickly on the day of the event, so it could be helpful take money out beforehand, said Downie.

Don’t forget that it’s Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, which means there will be road closures around the downtown area. It’s best to access the Glebe on foot or bicycle.

The best way to get there by bus is Route 1 or Route 7 on Bank Street, according to the Glebe Community Association’s website.

New additions to the event:

• Ecology Ottawa will be giving away thousands of free tree saplings as part of an initiative to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. Look for people wearing green helmets.

• Organizations will be present to accept donations.

• There will also be spots for vendors who aren’t from the Glebe in local churches, the community centre and schools. Food and baked goods will also be sold.

• Vendors are being asked to donate a portion of their sales to the Ottawa Food Bank, Downie said. The goal is to raise $12,000 this year.

Extra tips from organizers:

  1. Show up fairly early. The official start time is 8 a.m., however some shoppers show up as early as 6 a.m.
  2. Bring a backpack because it helps free your hands. Bring extra bags if you can.
  3. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle.

Ottawa Race Weekend

There are three races on Saturday:

Ottawa 2k – 3 p.m.

HTG Sports Ottawa 5k – 4 p.m.
