In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
Dow’s Lake, home of houseboats, canoes, paddleboats and a picturesque stopping point along the Rideau waterway, is a man-made lake. Named after settler Abram Dow, it was initially known as “Dow’s Great Swamp” but was intentionally flooded during the building of the Rideau Canal.
