It’s been called the Tonys of high school musical theatre and, on Sunday, students from across Ottawa won big at the Canada Capital Cappies award gala at the National Arts Centre.
“My drama teacher, she’s my everything,” said Victoria Miron, 18, who was nominated in the creativity category for her school’s production called Midsummer/Jersey.
“She approached me in September, actually the first day of school, and asked me to direct,” said Miron, who is a student at Sir Robert Borden High School.
The Cappies is a program that celebrates literacy and theatre by high school students, said Katie Lewis-Prieur, chairperson of the Canada Capital Cappies.
“But it also celebrates the performances themselves,” Lewis-Prieur said.
Teams of student critics were selected by the school and those critics watched performances from other participating schools and selected the nominees and winners, Lewis-Prieur said.
“I’m really happy because it’s going to be an amazing show,” Lewis-Prieur said.
“The kids are dynamite, they’re so talented.”
From directing, acting and choreography to lighting, sound effects and makeup, the productions are done entirely by students in grade nine through twelve from 26 different schools.

“I spent a month looking through every pamphlet on plays I could until I found Midsummer/Jersey,” Miron said.
“I worked hundreds of hours with those directors and those cast members. It was really stressful — I’m not going to lie — but at the end of the day, I was so proud of everybody that I worked with.”
Hundreds of parents, friends and fans filled the seats at the National Arts Centre. Backstage the students were buzzing with excitement and nerves.
The first award of the evening was for top critic grades nine to ten and grades eleven to twelve.
“I’m amazed, I didn’t think I was going to win,” said Evelyn Ashworth, 16, who won top critic for grades eleven and twelve.
“I’m thankful to have this award. It’s just such a great program. I’ve been having such a great time.”
Ashworth has been participating in the Cappies for the past two years and said she would love to be a director some day.
“Ottawa is such an amazing city for high school theatre,” said Ashworth, who is a student at All Saints High School.
“There’s such a high calibre, especially this year. It was so hard to pick because everyone was so talented.”
