Ottawa Citizen reporter Elizabeth Payne has been awarded the 2017 Joan Hollobon Award for a series of stories on the West African Ebola crisis and the development of a Canadian vaccine to protect against the deadly disease.

The prize, from the Canadian Public Relations Society, was awarded at the society’s annual conference in Kelowna, B.C. on Tuesday.

“Elizabeth presented a compelling, human face to an epidemic few Canadians — fortunately — will get to experience firsthand. A deserved winner of this year’s Hollobon,” wrote the judges.

The award is named for Joan Hollobon, a medical reporter with The Globe and Mail until her retirement in 1986. During that time, she acquired a reputation as a master of the art and science of medical reporting.

The award is presented annually to a member of the media “whose work as contributed significantly to the public’s understanding of health care.”
