An Ottawa dog is being inducted into the Purina Hall of Fame for his bark.

On New Year’s Eve, Leo, a Biewer Yorkshire terrier, woke up his owner, Brittany Cosgrove, 26, to warn her about a fire that had started in her bathroom.

“(I heard) a persistent bark, like, ‘You need to get up’,” says Cosgrove.

The Nepean resident, says she hadn’t heard anything because she typically has insomnia and fell into a deep sleep. However, once she was up at 2 a.m., Cosgrove noticed a light coming from her bathroom and discovered fire dripping from the wires in her ceiling.

“He was the fire alarm for the building,” says Cosgrove.

Because of Cosgrove and her dog, 30 residents were able to escape the Vancouver fire.

Cosgrove had only adopted the Ottawa dog 10 days prior to coming back to her Vancouver apartment.

Leo saved owner Brittany Cosgrove from a fire in December 2016 and is getting inducted into Purina Hall of Fame.

After the duo’s experience with the fire was picked up by local media, Cosgrove says she was approached by the Purina Hall of Fame representatives to share her story. The award honours animals that have performed live-saving acts of courage.

Leo, now 10 months old, is one of three dogs entering the hall of fame. Each animal received a medal of honour, $5,000 and a year’s supply of dog food.

“The medal is the size of his face, maybe even the size of his body,” says Cosgrove.

But Cosgrove says that after losing everything in the fire and moving back to Ottawa to live with family, she hopes the award money will give her a fresh start.

“After a crazy past six months, I’m glad that I have us,” says Cosgrove.
