Capital Facts: It used to cost $2 to stay at the Château Laurier

In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

All 306 private rooms at the Château Laurier used to cost $2 per night when it opened in 1912, the equivalent today of about $42. The hotel rooms were also among the first to offer indoor plumbing.
