In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

The Blue Rodeo song Stage Door was inspired by the alley behind Barrymore’s Music Hall. Written by Blue Rodeo’s Greg Keelor, the yearning ballad was included on their 2002 album, Palace of Gold.

“Down the alley and through the stage door,” Keelor sings. “Sometimes I wonder what I, what I do it for.”

Any band coming to town might have asked themselves the same question when pulling into the dark, sketchy passageway behind the Bank Street club, and then facing the steep, rusty staircase that leads to the stage door. In a 2008 interview, Keelor recalled the band’s first visit to Barrymore’s in the 1980s as one of their first out-of-town shows.

“I think we did a show in Kingston, and then drove up to Barrymore’s in a fierce snowstorm. Loading in through that alleyway and up those steps, you think, ‘Oh my God, what a mess this is. Icy and dangerous.’

“And then you walk into the faded glory. With all those chandeliers, it was really a feast for our eyes and rock ‘n’ roll sensibility. It was a beautiful room. ‘Oh my God, this is fantastic,’ we thought. What a perfect rock room.”
