The CHEO Foundation’s marquee fundraiser had another record-breaking year, raising more than $8.7 million in donations for the children’s hospital.

The 2017 telethon broke the record set by last years event, which raised $8 million for the hospital.

The annual broadcast, which began on CTV at 7 p.m. Saturday, allowed the hospital to share patient stories and introduce viewers to CHEO’s real “heroes” — the doctors, nurses and staff who dedicate their lives to caring for the children and youth in Ottawa.

“The reason they can continue to provide such amazing care is because the people in our region care so deeply for the kids,” said CHEO Foundation president Kevin Keohane in an emailed statement. “Donations and public support mean the world to the families who need CHEO and on their behalf we thank all who gave, for their dedication and unwavering support during the telethon and all year long.”

The telethon ended Sunday night at 7 p.m.

The final dollar total includes money presented to the CHEO Foundation from other fundraising events throughout the year, and from phone and online donations made during the telethon.

Proceeds will help CHEO purchase specialized medical equipment and make renovations within the hospital, and will aid research in cancer, youth mental health and childhood obesity.

A portion of the funds will also go to purchasing games, toys and crafts “to make a patient’s stay at CHEO as comfortable as possible.”
