China nursery explosion: Seven dead after ‘gas cylinder’ blast

At least seven people were killed and dozens injured in an explosion at a nursery in eastern China, with official media saying it was caused by ‘gas cylinders’.
The blast happened near the entrance to the building in Fengxian, in Jiangsu province, as parents would have been meeting their children on Thursday afternoon.
Two people were killed at the site, while another five died at hospital, said an online post from officials at Xuzhou, which administers Fengxian.
Another 59 people were injured, including nine who were in a critical condition, said the post on Sina Weibo, China’s Twitter.
The post did not say how many children were among the casualties.
It wasn't immediately clear whether the explosion was deliberately set or the result of an acciden
Unverified photos purportedly from the scene and posted on social media showed children and adults lying on the ground, some bleeding.
One of the victims appeared to have all his clothes burned off, while others sat in shock. Some lay on the floor appearing dazed, and one woman was cradling a crying child.
Police said the blast struck at the Chuangxin Kindergarten at around 4.50pm, the usual time that Chinese nurseries finish for the day.
A Weibo post from the People’s Daily newspaper, the official mouthpiece of the Communist Party, said it was “suspected” by local officials that “gas cylinders exploded” at the front of the building.
Local newspaper Xiandaikuaibao had earlier said on its website that the explosion was caused by a bottle of cooking gas.
Chinese news website Sohu quoted a local man saying he believed he heard what could have been “a gas explosion at a nearby food store".
It is the latest tragedy to strike a nursery in China, after a school bus was engulfed in flames last month in the eastern Shandong province.
The fire killed 11 children and the driver, while a teacher was badly injured.
The blaze was later said to have been intentionally started by the driver, who had a grievance over lost overtime wages.
There have also been knife attacks at schools in recent years, and last year a knife-wielding assailant injured seven outside a primary school in northern China.
There are few avenues for redress in China, and disgruntled citizens have been known to carry out bombings and knife attacks.
China maintains tight control over firearms and most attacks are carried out using knives, axes or homemade explosives.
