Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie and indigenous activist Sylvia Maracle will be receive the Order of Canada at a special ceremony Monday at Rideau Hall recognizing outstanding indigenous leadership in Canada.

The Tragically Hip, which includes Rob Baker, Johnny Fay, Paul Langlois and Gord Sinclair along with Downie, are all being named members of the Order. Downie’s bandmates will receive their honours at a later date with other recipients. The full list of the latest Order of Canada announcements has not been released.

Maracle, a Mohawk from the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and executive director of the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres (OFIFC), is to be named an Officer of the Order of Canada for her leadership in shaping the urban indigenous experience and for her efforts to promote the well-being of indigenous peoples across Canada.

In May 2016, Downie revealed he had been battling terminal brain cancer since December 2015. Shortly after that announcement, the band confirmed they would embark on a 15-show tour that summer in celebration of their latest studio album Man Machine Poem.

Following the tour, Downie released a solo album and graphic novel, Secret Path, inspired by a 12-year-old Ojibway boy, Chanie (Charlie) Wenjack, who died from hunger and exposure after trying to find his way home from a residential school.

Many Canadians have been rooting for Downie to receive Canada’s highest civilian honour. One Facebook page “Honour Gord Downie with the Order of Canada” has almost 28,000 “likes.”

Officers of of the Order of Canada is recognized for national service or achievement, while a member of the Order of Canada is honoured for contributions at the local or regional level or in a special field of activity.

Maracle and Downie will accept their insignia from Governor General David Johnston as part of a special presentation of Canadian honours in recognition of outstanding Indigenous leadership on Monday at Rideau Hall. The Hip’s band members are being honoured for their contributions to Canadian music and support for social and environmental causes at a later date.
