Paramedics were treating a 66-year-old man who spilled chemicals on his hands Thursday at Carleton University.
Ottawa Fire Services received a call around 4:30 p.m. that a chemist spilled methyl pyridine 2 and picoline chemicals on his hands at the National Wildlife Research Centre building at Carleton. The building was evacuated shortly after.
There were up to 20 people in the direct vicinity at the time of the chemical spill who may have been exposed but are not exhibiting any symptoms, said fire services.
The man was being treated on scene by a tactical paramedic who specializes in hazmat responses, said Marc-Antoine Deschamps, Ottawa paramedic’s public information officer.
“He should be released at the scene,” Deschamps said.
It was unknown if anyone else was treated in the spill.
