Ottawa police are taking part in a three-day training exercise with CBRNE – chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear explosives – counterparts starting Tuesday at Via Rail station on Tremblay Road.
On Wednesday and Thursday, they’ll be at the Greenbelt Research Farm on at the intersection of Woodroffe Avenue and Fallowfield Road.
Passersby will likely notice police and other emergency services’ vehicles but “don’t be alarmed, it’s just training,” a city police spokesman said.
According to the RCMP, the national CBRNE response team is called in to evaluate scenes potentially linked to terrorist or suspected terrorist activity. Such events typically involve the use of devices that can cause widespread damage or injury such as poisonous gases or explosives.
It can also be deployed to major events, such G8 and G20 summits, for onsite analysis of suspicious packages, attacks or unexpected incidents and provides police agencies with CBRNE training.
