This evening, Mayor Jim Watson presented the Key to the City to Sheila Fraser, Canada’s former Auditor General, at a ceremony at City Hall. The key was presented to Ms. Fraser in recognition of an illustrious and distinguished career, including being the first woman to serve as the Auditor General of Canada.

Sheila Fraser was Canada’s first woman Auditor General, holding that post from 2001 until 2011. During her tenure, she investigated many contentious issues including the long-gun registry, the Federal sponsorship scandal, and funding of G8 and G20 summits amongst others.

Born in Dundee, Quebec, Ms. Fraser is a Professional Chartered Accountant and earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University. She began her career at Ernst and Young, where she became a partner in 1981. She joined the Office of the Auditor General in 1999 as Deputy Auditor General, Audit Operations, prior to assuming the role of Auditor General.

Ms. Fraser continues to hold positions on several different boards of directors and has been recognized for her work by her professional associations including then designation “Fellow” by the Ordre des comptables professionnels agréés du Québec and by the Institute of Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario. She has also been presented with both Gold and Diamond Jubilee medals and has been recognized with honourary degrees from 17 Canadian universities.
