The City of Ottawa is responding to community demand for a more strategic approach to urban forest management, according to a plan approved today by the Environment and Climate Protection Committee.

The Urban Forest Management Plan is a 20-year strategic plan for growing Ottawa’s urban forest and making it healthier, more diverse and resilient. The plan focuses on working towards sustainability, protecting existing trees, increasing knowledge of the urban forest, expanding community engagement, minimizing risk, fostering resiliency and diversity, managing the urban forest more proactively and providing resources to urban forest management.

One of the 26 recommendations outlined in the plan includes a review of all tree-related by-laws, including the Urban Tree Conservation By-law. Committee received an update on this by-law, which regulates the removal of trees on private land within Ottawa’s urban area.

Today a report on the water quality of Ottawa’s creeks, streams and rivers was shared with Committee. Between 2000 and 2014, water quality improved, though some smaller bodies of water in urban or agriculture-heavy areas have lesser water quality.

Committee also received an update on the backflow prevention program to protect the City’s drinking water quality. To be implemented over 10 years, the program will address properties that pose a severe to moderate risk by 2027.

These reports will be considered by City Council at its meeting on Wednesday, June 28, 2017.
