The City of Ottawa is the first Canadian city selected to host a prestigious international conference focused on making cities and communities more livable. The 55th annual International Making Cities Livable (IMCL) Conference will take place in Ottawa from May 14 to 18, 2018.
The City of Ottawa and IMCL, along with international media partner CityLab, the highly regarded and well-known publication focused on writing about the future of cities, will welcome the world to Canada’s capital for a conference bringing together people of vision to present the best examples of livable communities from Europe and the Americas, while honouring cities and civic leaders for their achievements.
The conference is an opportunity to showcase the planning projects and initiatives that support Ottawa’s aspiration to be the most livable major city in North America. The City of Ottawa will present a section of local content at the conference, highlighting our endeavours to make life in Ottawa sustainable, affordable and people-focused for the benefit of all.
The IMCL movement started in 1985 and focuses on the importance of making cities livable for children first; the need for public transit, bicycle lanes, and traffic calmed streets; human-scale architecture and mixed-use urban fabric; and reviving the city centre and creating public places where people gather for farmers’ markets, festivals, outdoor cafes and community social life. World leaders, city officials, professionals, scholars and students in a wide array of disciplines gather to exchange experiences and ideas to improve health and well-being for all, and to ensure the long term sustainability of the natural and man-made environment.
Ottawa was selected as the IMCL host for 2018 as a result of our ongoing Bid More, Win More, Host More strategy, aimed at showcasing Ottawa on the national and international stage while attracting world-class events to Ottawa to promote economic prosperity and growth. A large international event such as the IMCL conference is expected to generate $1.5 million in economic impact for the city, as well as contribute to our growing reputation as a welcoming and experienced host to major events.
