The Ministry of Canadian Heritage appears to have found what its looking for.
U2 bandmates Bono and The Edge will be appearing on Parliament Hill on Canada Day to perform one song during the country’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
While the announcement was initially circulated by Twitter, the ministry confirmed the news in an email to Postmedia Friday.
“U2 band members, Bono and the Edge, will be making a special appearance during the Canada Day Opening celebrations around noon on Parliament Hill. Bono and the Edge will be performing one song,” said Justine Lafond, a department spokesperson.
The news sent shockwaves through social media and helped to ramp up interest in the show, which some people had complained was lacklustre.
There was no revelation on when the rock superstars would be arriving in Ottawa, the band is scheduled to play a show in East Rutherford, NJ on June 29 and it has another show already scheduled for July 1st in Cleveland.
Getting the pair to Parliament Hill and back to the airport to make the Ohio show could be challenging with hundreds of thousands of people expected in the downtown core.
Band officials claimed no knowledge of the performance, suggesting it may have been booked by federal government employees directly with the performers themselves. Pierre-Olivier Herbert, press secretary for Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly, said the performance has been planned for a extended period of time, even though the government chose not to publicize it until one week before the big day.
Bono himself has several times declared himself to be a fan of both Canada and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for positions on issues ranging from world health problems and gender equality.
While officials have been hesitant to reveal exact estimates, hundreds of thousands of people are expected to be downtown Ottawa to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. The celebrations begin with a concert of Canadian songs performed using the 53-bell carillon in the Peace Tower. There will be a 21-gun salute, an air show featuring the Snowbirds, a citizenship ceremony for new Canadians, dance “battles,” street performers and a performance by Cirque du Soleil. There will also be a concert lineup including, Alessia Cara, Walk off the Earth, Serena Ryder and Gordon Lightfoot.
