In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

On a three-storey home on Stewart Street in Sandy Hill, there’s a house with a large Star of David set in white stucco. The home, built in the early 20th century by Oscar Petigorsky, a Russian-born Jewish immigrant, is close by the University of Ottawa.

The reason for the star? According to his granddaughter, Petigorsky wanted to make a statement towards the school, which was then dominated by Catholics and was – like some universities at the time – less than hospitable towards Jews.
