There is no shortage of ways to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday on the July 1 long weekend in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

From live music played by some the country’s best to ice cream making to craft beer in the park, here is a user’s guide to everything you need to know about Canada Day in the capital.

Some quick tips:

  • Bring water, toilet paper and cash
  • Walk or bike as there will be several road closures and few places to park
  • Use OC Transpo and free shuttle buses that will be provided from downtown to Jacques-Cartier Park
  • Arrive early for fireworks and major concert events to ensure a good view
Downtown/Central

1. Parliament Hill


* From 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., enjoy a Carillon concert of “O Canada” and “God Save the Queen” by Dominion Carillonneur Andrea McCrady, as well as several pop-up performances

* Opening ceremony: 11:40 a.m to 1:15 p.m. Watch the Inspection of the Guard at the Peacekeeping Monument on Sussex Drive. There will also be a 21-gun salute and an air-show by the Snowbirds and CF-18

* From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., catch shows by Calgary singer-songwriter Kinnie Starr and several other performers

* From 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., witness new Canadians take their Oath of Citizenship, and see citizens repeat their Oath of Citizenship at a reaffirmation ceremony

* From 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., enjoy performances by buskers and dancers, including a Canada 150 “Sharing Dance”

* From 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., enjoy the main concert — a music show packed with Canadiana — including performances by Alessia Cara, Walk Off the Earth, Gordon Lightfoot, Marie-Mai, Kelly Bado, Lisa LeBlanc and more

* At 11 p.m., not one, not two, but five pyro launch sites will fuel the annual fireworks on Parliament Hill for 20 minutes and 17 seconds (to make 2017 — get it?) in honour of Canada’s 150 birthday

2. Major’s Hill Park


* From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., enjoy a variety of family fun throughout the park, including buskers, face-painting, rides on the VIA Rail miniature train (sorry, kids only), dancing, games and the 25th annual Great Canadian Chicken BBQ which supports the Ottawa Food Bank

* From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Tim Horton’s Family stage, there will be a rotation of live performances (details not yet available)

* On the Tim Horton’s main stage from 10:30 a.m. to 10:20 p.m., there will be a mix of family acts, as well as music by Mother Mother, DJ Rise Ashen, Jonathan Painchaud, Ruth B and more

3. Canadian Museum of Nature, 240 McLeod St.

* The museum will be offering free admission to its permanent exhibits

* Explore Canada through the museum’s exhibits, interactive galleries, multimedia tours and a kids’ activity zone from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. See the Canadian Arctic landscape by visiting the Arctic gallery or discover the country’s three coasts through interactive exploration

4. National Gallery of Canada, 380 Sussex Dr.

* The gallery is offering free admission, although public and guided tours and interpreters will not be available on Canada Day

* From 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., celebrate Canada Day with the family by making party hats in the Scotiabank Great Hall, getting a temporary tattoo and having fun in the kids’ scavenger hunt throughout the gallery

5. National Arts Centre, 1 Elgin St.

* The centre is offering free admission

* From 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., come celebrate the grand re-opening of the NAC with music and food ($10 for a food ticket). There will be a barbecue in the morning and live performances by the NAC Orchestra and Ottawa Jazz Orchestra, as well as a ribbon cutting and citizenship ceremony

6. Canadian War Museum, 1 Vimy Pl.

* The museum is offering free admission, and is open from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

* What better way to spend your Canada Day than dressing up like a gladiator? Explore the Gladiators and the Colosseum – Death and Glory exhibition at the museum’s Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae Gallery. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can find out what it’s like to be a gladiator, etch your very own Roman graffiti, suit-up and pose with your friends and then discover what you would have seen in gladiatorial games 2,000 years ago

7. Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, 901 Prince of Wales Dr.

* The museum is offering free admission

* From 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., have a fun-filled day packed with live animals, ice cream making, face-painting (additional fee), crafts, wagon-rides and more

* At a separate event on the museum grounds from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m., Dominion Day on the Farm will feature live performances by Kathleen Edwards and Amos the Transparent. You can also feast on an array of foods from local vendors, and kick back with one of four new Canada-inspired beers released by host Dominion City Brewing Co. Admission is $20 for adults and $5 for kids

8. TD Ottawa Jazz Festival, Laurier Avenue West and Elgin Street

* Enjoy free shows throughout the day at the festival

* At the TekSavvy Main Stage at Confederation Park at 4 p.m., take in the sounds of soul-pop singer NEFE, and catch Montreal-based orchestral indie pop group Groenland

* At the Tartan Homes Stage at Marion Dewar Plaza at 1 p.m., you won’t want to miss Diyet, who combines alternative folk, country and traditional aboriginal music. At 3 p.m., the biggest and brightest musicians from our military group The Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces Jazz Combo will perform a big band and jazz repertoire. At 5 p.m., jazz duo Blue Moon Marquee will make you believe you’re in the presence of a multi-instrument band with their full-sound performance

9. The Brewery Market: Canada Day, 1064 Wellington St. W.
* Free admission


* From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., enjoy a selection of beers from nine different breweries at Hintonburg Park. This is a kid-friendly event and will have a splash pad and playground. Don’t miss out on the Yoga on Tap event at 11 a.m. and a variety of food vendors. Space is limited.

10. Glenview Homes Canada Day in Kanata, Walter Baker Park, 100 Charlie Rogers Pl.

* From 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., there will be face painting, bouncy castles, crafts and more at Walter Baker Park. Also get ready for dancing, yoga, baseball and performances by Vicki Brittle, Krista Jane, Andrew Cassara and more

* From 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., enjoy musical performances at the Urbandale main stage by Holy Trinity Rhythm and Blues Band, Andrew Waines, The Adopted, Daisy Train, Cannons, Tomi Swick and Finger Eleven

* Opening ceremonies will feature the RCMP Pipes, Drums and Dancers parade at 5:45 p.m.

* Fireworks will begin at 10 p.m.

Southwest


11. Mattamy Homes Canada Day in Barrhaven, Clarke Fields Park, 93 Houlahan St.

* Breakfast: Seniors breakfast from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

* Starting at 11 a.m., experience midway rides, human foosball and more. The Canada Day festival in Barrhaven is jam-packed with live performances, and food and goods vendors

* From 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., rock out to performances on the main stage by Speeches, Parade of Flags, Arms of the Girl, Rebecca Noelle and Alter Ego, and enjoy some free birthday cake

* Fireworks begin at 10 p.m.

* Travel info: Shuttle buses will be leaving from Ross’ Independent (3777 Strandherd Dr.) and Heart & Crown (3161 Strandherd Dr. Unit 300) to/from Clarke Fields. The last shuttle leaves from Ross’ and H&C at 9 p.m. There will be no shuttle buses from 9:15 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. because of fireworks. There is limited parking. Bicycle lockup is available

Carp

12. Diefenbunker Museum, 3929 Carp Rd.

* Free admission to the museum from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

* Search all four storeys of the bunker in the maple leaf scavenger hunt. There will also be face-painting, crafts and a barbecue to satisfy your hunger, with hot dogs, veggie dogs and frozen treats

Dunrobin

13. Dominion Day celebration, Pinhey’s Point, 270 Pinhey Point Rd.

* Admission by donation

* From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., go back in time to 1867 and celebrate by playing Victorian-era games and activities such as tug of war

Orléans

14. Canada D’eh Fest, Petrie Island Park, Trim Road

* From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., enjoy a variety of live entertainment, from DJ Carivibe to kid zone activities which will include reptiles, princesses and a magic show. There will also be a special performance by School of Rock Orléans

* From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., watch a special opening ceremony featuring a celebration of indigenous peoples and our national anthem. The public will also be invited to sign a Canadian flag to present to our troops

* From 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., quench your thirst with a cold one and satiate your hunger with hot dogs and hamburgers at the fest’s barbecue

* From 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., enjoy music by Wise, Young & King and Tribe Royal

* Fireworks will start at 10 p.m.

* Travel info: There will be a free shuttle service to and from Petrie Island Park leaving from La Cité Collégiale, Kids Kingdom and Trim Park & Ride between 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. to 11:45 p.m.

15. Canada Aviation and Space Museum, 11 Aviation Parkway

* The museum will offer free admission, and parking is $5

* From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., soar through the museum’s activities and demonstrations and watch performances by the Canadian Armed Forces Parachute Team. There will also be a variety of activities, special performances and an autograph session with the parachute team

Gatineau


16. Canadian Museum of History, 100 Laurier St.

* The museum will offer free admission from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

* From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., explore your artistic side with Family Fun with Crafts at the Kaleidoscope Gallery in the Canadian Children’s Museum. Kids will get to make friendship bracelets, headbands and more

* Starting at 1 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., enjoy dancing and music in the Grand Hall by folk group Le Grand Portage, who will be performing French-Canadian music and dance

17. Jacques-Cartier Park, 285 Laurier St.

* MOSAÏCANADA 150: Take a tour of one of the most extraordinary horticultural displays in the Ottawa-Gatineau region, with more than 40 different arrangements that represent Canada’s culture, history and values. Free admission

What else you should know


Transportation

OC and Para Transpo services will be free all day on July 1 until 3 a.m. on July 2. Buses and the O-Train will be on a holiday schedule and will run later than normal.

There will be a free shuttle from downtown Ottawa to Jacques-Cartier Park from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 1.

An OC Transpo information booth will be set up at the Rideau Centre’s OC Transpo Customer Service Centre from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Security

Security screenings will take place on Wellington Street before entering Parliament Hill. Once visitors leave the area, they will have to wait in line and to check in again before re-entry.

A broad network of downtown and ByWard Market streets, as well as some in Gatineau, will be closed to all vehicles for various parts of July 1, starting at 6 a.m. (residents with proof of address will be permitted). Some closures on Wellington Street may even start on June 30.

Garbage collection

There will be no change of schedule to garbage, recycling and green bin for the week of July 3.
