All are welcome for Canada’s 150th birthday — except vehicles, cyclists and even some pedestrians on some Ottawa and Gatineau streets.
The capital is expected to be its busiest with a crowded schedule of events and tens of thousands of visitors. With all the festivities, people should pay attention to various road closures affecting the city and plan their route.
June 27 from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.
June 27 from 3 p.m. to July 4 at 4 p.m.
June 28 from 5 a.m. to July 4 at 4 p.m.
June 30 from 5 a.m. to July 2 at 12 a.m.
On the eve of Canada Day at 5 a.m. till July 2 at 12 a.m. the following streets will be closed for cars:
Ottawa roads closed for vehicles on July 1 at 6 a.m. to July 2 at 3 a.m.
On Canada Day night from 6 p.m. until 3 a.m. on July 2:
Streets closed for vehicles on July 1 at 10 p.m. to July 2 at 3 a.m.
Close to the end of the night at 10 p.m. on Canada’s day of celebration until 3 a.m. the following day, Laurier Avenue from Elgin Street to Cumberland Street, Queen Elizabeth Driveway on-ramp to Laurier Avenue westbound and the Laurier Avenue on ramp to Queen Elizabeth Driveway southbound will be closed.
The Alexandria Bridge will be closed to vehicles from 6 a.m. on July 1 and for pedestrians and bicyclists on from 9 p.m. on July 1 until 3 a.m.
Gatineau Streets closed for vehicles starting at 6:30 a.m. on Canada Day to July 2 at 3 a.m.
Meanwhile, in Gatineau, Laurier Street will be closed from Maisonneuve Boulevard to Papineau Street and Papineau Street to Des Allumettières Boulevard will be closed starting at 6:30 a.m. on Canada Day to July 2 at 3 a.m.
Also streets including Courcelette Street from Maisonneuve Boulevard, Hôtel-de-Ville Street from Notre-Dame-de-l’Île Street, Victoria Street from Notre-Dame-de-l’Île Street, Des Allumettières Boulevard from Maisonneuve Boulevard to Laurier Street for vehicles at starting 6:30 a.m. to July 2 at 3 a.m. Notre-Dame-de-l’Île Street starting from Élisabeth-Bruyère Street to Des Allumettières Boulevard will be closed at this time as well.
Gatineau Streets closed on July 1 at 6 p.m. to July 2 at 3 a.m.
At 6 p.m. on July 1 to 3 a.m. the next day, Papineau Street from Notre-Dame-de-l’Île and Élisabeth-Bruyère Street from Notre-Dame-de-l’Île will be closed to Laurier Street. In turn, Laurier Street from Maisonneuve Boulevard to Des Allumettières Boulevard and all access to the Canadian History Museum will be closed to vehicles. And no vehicles will be allowed on the Alexandra Bridge’s on ramp from Laurier Street.
Bicycle and pedestrian closures start on July 1 at 4:30 p.m. to July 2 and 3 a.m.
As for street closures for Ottawa bicyclists and pedestrians, there is no access to the Rideau Canal Locks; the Valiants Stairs, from Elgin Street and Wellington Street; the Dufferin Stairs, from Wellington Street, under the Plaza Bridge from Elgin Street and access to the Trans Canada Trail also known as the Ottawa River Pathway via the Archives to Rideau Canal locks. These closures start at 4:30 p.m. on July 1 and 3 a.m. on July 2.
Bicycles and pedestrians will also not be allowed on the Mackenzie Kind Bridge on July 1 at 7 p.m. until July 2 and 3 a.m.
The only ones allowed to access closed streets on Canada Day are residents with a valid driver’s licence that notes proof of residence, hotel patrons with proof of hotel reservation, people with Official Canada Day circulation access passes, employees of the City of Ottawa and Gatineau, transit supervisors and emergency responders. The only exception is that the Alexandra Bridge will still be closed off for them.
According to the City of Ottawa, transit is the best option for Canada Day.
Free Para Transpo and OC Transpo service will be in effect until the end of the service day at 5 a.m. on July 2. The O-Train Trillium Line will run throughout the day and all evening until 1 a.m. The Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) will also be providing free service on July 1. Thousands of free Park & Ride spaces
- There will be free Park & Ride spaces available at 12 OC Transpo Park & Ride lots served by high-frequency Transitway routes 61, 62, 94, 95, 97, 98 and 99.
- Many more spaces will be available courtesy of these shopping centres: Bayshore, Billings Bridge, Carlingwood, Place d’Orléans, St. Laurent Centre and South Keys, as well as Algonquin College, Carleton University and Canada Post (Heron/Riverside).
Leave early and arrive in time
- Due to large crowds, anyone attending an event on Parliament Hill is advised to arrive two to three hours before show time in order to proceed through security screening areas.
- You should leave home by 8 p.m. to arrive in time for the 11 p.m. fireworks display.
- Bus detours will be in effect downtown due to road closures.
- Mackenzie King Bridge will be closed to pedestrians after 7 p.m., so customers cannot be picked up or dropped off at that station in the evening.
- After the fireworks downtown, buses will be available on Slater, Albert, and Bank Streets.
- Route 91 will operate service after the fireworks from downtown to Trim Station, providing a fast, direct trip to Orléans.
- The last local buses will depart transit stations at around 12:30 a.m. or 1 a.m.
Free Shuttle between Ottawa and Gatineau
- Buses operate from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. between the National Art Gallery and Jacques-Cartier Park.

- OC Transpo’s Customer Service Centre in the Rideau Centre will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
- An OC Transpo information booth will be located at Mackenzie Avenue and Rideau Street from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
