Commuters, particularly those using OC Transpo, are being warned to expect large-scale delays in the downtown area as officials put together Canada Day installations and tighten security in the parliamentary precinct.

Transpo took to Twitter early Wednesday to warn riders to either leave early or expect to arrive late.

The warning follows Tuesday afternoon’s commuting nightmare that saw huge lineups of buses due to road closings and construction work downtown.

The main culprit was the closing of Wellington Street to allow for the installation of massive concrete security bollards.

While there was no official explanation for the bollards, it’s an apparent safety measure against any potential automobile attack such as occurred in London and elsewhere in recent months.

The closing caused a domino effect on adjacent streets, where the Transitway crosses through downtown.

Complications increased Wednesday as Elgin Street was also closed from Wellington as part of the preparations.
